background
Portland-Vancouver area middle school and high school teachers have
a unique opportunity to participate in a research project focusing
on air quality in the region. Dramatic population shifts in our
region have resulted in increasing emissions that have altered the
composition of our airshed. In a 4-week Summer Research Institute
teachers will learn how to monitor, analyze and model the changes
in the atmosphere and how to bring this on-going research project
into the classroom. Institute participants will receive a daily
stipend, development funds, graduate science credit and atmospheric
monitoring equipment for their schools. The Horizons Project is
sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Center for
Science Education at Portland State University. For more information
and application materials, please contact Linda George at 503-725-3861
or georgeL@pdx.edu
The
Horizons Project is currently in the middle of its first year. This
program builds upon what has already been accomplished through the
meteorological network developed by the MET NET project.
