research

The research interests of the Horizons Project focus on air quality issues. An understanding of local meteorology, climate, and pollution mechanisms are important to be able to understand those air quality issues in a meaningful way. By collecting data on surface level conditions throughout the region research into mechanisms, trends, forecasting and modeling can all be accomplished. Many of the highlights in our research area focus on our data network. Other areas such as background information and what to do with the data are also covered.

network status

The Horizons Network is currently operating and reporting near real-time data about air quality and meteorological parameters from around the Portland metro area. This table provides a look a which sites are currently reporting data to the Horizons server. This table also includes links to: graph data, current conditions, and data access (raw data download area).

access raw data files

To view files in your browser simply click on the file. To download the data, right-click on the file if you are using a W95 machine or simply click and hold on the file with a Mac.

graph data

The data collected through the Horizons network is all available to be viewed through our on-line graphing utility. Select the site, date, and parameters you are interested in and it will provide a graph if data was available for that day. This data is raw, please contact us if you have questions concerning calibration, system audits, or other network questions.
current conditions
Find out what's going on outside right now. This data represents an average value for the last ten minutes at any site currently on-line.

site information

Documentation of all our sites is an ongoing project. This area covers the basics for all sites; location, equipment, and links. A few sites have photographs of the siting conditions with additional details. Watch for this area to grow as more photos and measurements are taken.
research at PSU
The Atmospheric Research at Portland State University works on a variety of measurement and modeling systems. Besides the criteria pollutants that Horizons monitors (Ozone and CO) the group makes measurements of anthropogenic and biogenic hydrocarbons, NOx, particulates, and hydroxyl radical. For information on one of their measurement campaigns, look at the FAGE site.
mapping
Mapping and GIS are critical parts to many of the research and educational activities at Horizons. This section of our site will showcase completed projects, tutorials, software and data. On-line mapping of Horizons data and modeled parameters is our next ambitious goal.

modeling

We are still developing the Urban Airshed Model which will be the basis of our main scientific goal within the Horizons Project. A working model of the region's airshed could aid decision makers in policy.
